This week’s Principal’s Message addresses the need for all Catholics to stand up for their Faith and its beliefs. October is recognized by the Church as Respect Life Month each year. This annual “call to action” has grown each and every year, to the point where more and more people, young and old, have become involved in having their voices heard in regard to this contentious issue.
One of the things that most people of faith believe is that all others think like they do. The effect of this assumption is that we become complacent and apathetic to challenges to our beliefs, assuming that these challenges are “one offs” that will simply disappear and go away. However, with the growth of secularism throughout the United States and the world, we are seeing an erosion of traditional beliefs and values at every turn. Without getting into the specifics of what this looks like, and there are many, it is necessary for us Catholic Christians to no longer be the “silent majority”, but become the “vocal majority”.
At a time when it seems fashionable to protest, march, shout down, physically harm, destroy property, slander others, etc. when people have a different opinion or belief than ours, we cannot afford to allow this to go on unchecked. We need to make it a point to let others know the truth about what is really happening in regard to the unborn, elderly, marginalized, and handicapped. We need to fight against the current tide that makes value judgements about these people based upon their usefulness or how much of an inconvenience they are. It seems that our “disposable society”, where we simply throw away anything we don’t want, has now spread to all forms of human life. What was once unthinkable is now commonplace. This is why we need to speak out against this abomination!
As Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI said,
"The Bible says that whoever violates a human being violates God's property. Human life stands under God's special protection, because each human being, however wretched or exalted he or she may be, however sick or suffering, however good for nothing or important, whether born or unborn, whether incurably ill or radiant with health - each one bears God's breath, each his image. That is the deepest reason for the inviolability of human dignity, and upon it is founded ultimately every civilization”.
You might ask yourself, “What can I do?” The answer is, “More than you think!” First of all, you can pray. October is also the Month of the Rosary. Pray that our Blessed Mother will join us in this battle to change peoples’ hearts about the sanctity of life in all its forms. Next, join a Respect Life ministry that exists at most parishes, sharing the important truth about the “culture of death” Saint John Paul II spoke about so often. Finally, be audible and visible about you stance on life, whether it be praying at an abortion clinic, volunteering at nursing homes or homes for the aged, spending time coaching at the Special Olympics or in Challenger programs for the disabled, and making your voice heard by promoting pro-life candidates and voting during public elections.
Please continue to pray for our school, its staff, students and families, and our clergy as we strive to provide an education that is unapologetically Catholic, family centered, caring to others and respectful to all. Please check our website, Facebook page and the Church bulletin for updates and upcoming events that you can enjoy with us.
